Assistant Snow Safety Director

The Assistant Snow Safety Director plays a vital role in overseeing the Avalanche Program and Snow Safety team, ensuring the safety of our employees and guests within avalanche terrain. The Assistant Snow Safety Director is responsible for managing the Avalanche Program and Snow Safety team in the absence of the Snow Safety Director.

Position Responsibilities

  • Works under supervision of the Snow Safety Director.
  • Works collaboratively to formulate policies but does not necessarily have final authority for approval.
  • Receives guidance in terms of broad goals and overall objectives and is responsible for implementing the strategical methods to attain them. 
  • Gives input on performance evaluations for all ski patrollers who participate in Snow Safety program.
  • Supervises avalanche rescue training, avalanche mitigation procedures, and daily risk assessments within a team environment, ensuring timely terrain openings and safe avalanche mitigation when necessary.
  • Oversees ski area closures and boundaries in accordance with the Alaska Ski Safety Act.
  • Monitors weather, snowpack and terrain conditions; maintains records of weather and mitigation strategies.
  • Oversees Snow Safety budget and supplies including managing explosives in accordance with Federal and State guidelines.
  • Maintains the department avalanche manual; stays abreast of industry standards and best practices.
  • Maintains positive working relationship with all departments; communicates avalanche observations and trends with the Mountain General Manager.
  • Seeks opportunities to enhance guest experiences, and initiate guest contact.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • High School Diploma or high school equivalent required.
  • Previous snow safety experience is required.
  • Ability to ski all terrain in all snow/weather conditions for extended periods is essential.
  • AIRE Level 3 or AAA or National Avalanche School or equal to or greater than current standards avalanche education required.
  • Current CPR certification required.
  • Minimum Outdoor Emergency Care or EMT required.
