Ski Patrol Night Supervisor

Position summary:  The Ski Patrol Night Supervisor assists the Patrol Directors in supervision of paid and volunteer patrollers during Day and Night Skiing operations, facilitates closing duties at the end of Day and Night Shifts, and helps facilitate terrain usage for various ski groups, clubs and races.

Position responsibilities:

  • Assists Patrol Directors oversee all Mountain Operations in their safety aspects.
  • Helps to ensure timely openings of ski terrain when possible.  Notify public and affected departments of delays and reasons.
  • Direct and supervise all members of the ski patrol both paid staff and volunteers.  Report directly to the Patrol Director.
  • Work closely with various ski groups, clubs and race organizers, to provide prime skiing terrain for the public while insuring space for approved training and events.
  • Help review and revise the Operations Plan and Patrol Manual.
  • Assumes Incident Command in the event of a lift evacuation during night operations.
  • Helps see that the professional patrol members are well trained in emergency care, lift safety and evacuation, and other areas of patrol safety and rescue.
  • Work with the Volunteer Patrol Director to supervise and assure quality volunteer patrollers.
  • Ensure that safety is first during all events held on the mountain.
  • Ensure uniforms are issued, kept in good repair, labeled, and inventoried. 
  • Regular ski inspections of all areas necessary to assure work run quality and safe consistent hazard marking procedures.
  • Inventory and inspect all fire extinguishers from Ski Patrol facilities.
  • Ensure Ski Patrol department has all necessary SDS requirements.
  • Monitor skills and training in conjunction with Patrol Director and Assistant Patrol Director.
  • Work closely with Trail Crew to train and orient them as needed.
  • Coordinates with grooming crews at closing and facilitates patrol pulling projects.
  • Monitors night lighting and coordinates with lift maintenance for repair.
  • Coordinates New Year’s Torchlight Parade.
  • Oversee management of the emergency cache in the GLX.

Essential skills and experience: Must be at least 21 years of age.  Must be familiar with Ski area operations and all outer areas.  Knowledge and practice of safe, effective ski cutting of avalanches. Minimum of 5 years patrolling. Proficient in technical rope work including: knots, anchors, directional systems, belay, self evacuation and lift evacuation Minimum of 3 seasons avalanche mitigation.  Skilled and experienced at locating multiple transceiver burials.  Comfort and ability to work in dark, cold and wet environments.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Must possess the following:

  • OEC or EMT certified
  • Current CPR/AED certification
  • NSP Member
  • ATF&E Background Check
  • Ideal not but required: Rigging for Rescue or Sprat certification
  • Alyeska Resort will provide continuing education and training to qualify for OEC and CPR certification.

  • Physical demands: Demonstrate strong skiing and toboggan handling skills.  Ability to lift/carry and ski with minimum load of 50 pounds.  Employee may be required to pass a functional capacity test developed for this job.
  • Work Environment:  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to high, precarious places and inclement weather conditions. 
  • Schedule: Closing shift Wednesday through Sunday
