Salary: $80,000 to $100,000 per year

The Assistant Director of Engineering at Alyeska Resort plays a vital role in enhancing the guest and employee experience by ensuring the efficient operation and maintenance of the resort’s facilities. This position supports the Director of Engineering in overseeing the maintenance team, managing daily operations, and implementing preventative maintenance programs. The Assistant Director will assist in the management of various engineering systems including co-generation natural gas turbines, electrical systems, HVAC, plumbing, and telecommunications.

Position Responsibilities 

  • Conduct daily inspections to assess the maintenance and operation of the resort's physical structures, grounds, and all related systems and equipment.
  • Lead the teams in daily tasks and projects, ensuring timely and high-quality completion of maintenance activities.
  • Supervises Engineering in the absence of the director of engineering. 
  • Assist in the day-to-day management of the engineering team, including the coordination of contractors and contracted tasks.
  • Support the implementation and maintenance of a comprehensive preventative maintenance program.
  • Maintain updated records of all equipment and ensure thorough documentation.
  • Assist in developing an effective team that works cohesively to complete tasks to the highest quality standards.
  • Assist with scheduling, payroll, and other administrative duties.
  • Maintain an appropriate supply of materials and equipment to meet daily operating and maintenance requirements.
  • Ensure cleanliness and organization of the work area, including inventory management, requisition, trash removal, and cleanup.
  • Stay informed and educated on Safety and OH&S requirements to ensure compliance.
  • Be available to report to the hotel or staff housing in the event of emergencies such as fires, equipment failures, floods, or other disasters.
  • Assist in producing accurate forecasting and budgeting, conducting financial reviews, tracking expenses, and managing other fiscal activities.
  • Develop preventative maintenance practices and monitor and tender all service contracts.
  • Take a "hands-on" and "lead by example" approach with daily engineering duties and projects as required.
  • Build collaborative relationships, both internally and externally, that support the delivery of organizational KPIs.
  • Execute business plans and budgets supporting the overall market positioning and financial goals of the organization.
  • Adjust daily, weekly, and monthly financial outcomes to optimize revenues and margins.
  • Ensure all assigned deliverables are executed with minimal follow-up required in terms of timeliness, scope, and quality.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Essential Skills and Experience   

  • Experience: 3-5 years in a progressively senior role with strong knowledge of engineering and maintenance processes.
  • Education: Post-secondary education in a related field is an asset. Must possess a 4th – 5th Class Power Engineer Certificate for a minimum of 3 years.
  • Technical Skills: Experience in preventative maintenance, energy management, fire safety, and health and safety. Excellent knowledge of public construction and building systems, permits, licensing, and codes related to public building and fire safety.
  • Tool Proficiency: Skilled in the proper and safe use of all tools, equipment, materials, chemicals, and products related to the department.
  • Industry Knowledge: Ability to stay informed on state-of-the-art developments affecting the safe and effective operation of the building facility.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Teamwork: Recognized team player and self-starter with strong organizational skills.
  • Training and Development: Ability to train, coach, and develop associates in an entrepreneurial and progressive environment.
  • Technical Proficiency: Computer knowledge required.

Compensation: $80,000 - $100,000 USD

Physical demands: This job requires a high level of physical fitness and strength.  While performing the job duties, the Employee will be required to climb ladders, gain access to high roofs, lift his/her own weight, lift and balance heavy items, such as pumps, boiler parts, generator and generator parts and other heavy items.  In certain circumstances, the Employee may need to be able to ski to on mountain locations.  This job requires physical exertion virtually the entire day and during many nights.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, squat, lay, climb, walk, sit; use hands, arms and legs to lift, touch, feel, write and use a computer keyboard; and talk or hear. The employee is also regularly required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move heavier objects with the assistance of others and mechanical assist devices. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.  Employee may be required to pass a functional capacity test developed for this job.
