Hiking/Mountain Guide

This job is located in Girdwood, Alaska. The Hiking/Mountain Guide leads guest excursions exploring the 1,600 acres of Alyeska’s Mountain Resort, as well as the trail systems throughout Girdwood’s glacier valley.

Responsibilities

  • Lead group outdoor activities for guests of all ability and fitness levels. Outdoor activities may involve hiking, climbing, light bouldering, bicycling, and eco touring.
  • Promote a culture of safety among guests and team members
  • Follow the Resort’s posted signs and trail maps.
  • Follow best practices in avoiding and/or encountering wildlife  
  • Attend ongoing training to keep up to date with contemporary concepts and progressions, striving to better our teaching and guiding techniques.
  • Must work well in a team environment.
  • Able to work successfully with a variety of audiences, general public, parents, children and peers.
  • Excellent communication skills, demonstrated good judgment, facilitation and problem-solving skills.
  • Able to work in a fast-paced team environment as well as independently.
  • Organized and creative, with strong supervisory talent and commitment to a thriving team.
  • Previous guiding experience in outdoor education a plus.
  • Able to maintain a flexible schedule, sometimes working long and irregular hours, including all weekends.
  • Arrive at work on time, with equipment ready, uniform clean and tidy, presenting a professional appearance
  • Work as a team with colleagues and other mountain departments so that all may benefit from working in an environment of good will and mutual respect
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the MLC Director or Supervisors, as well as other Mountain Managers.

  • Excellent customer service, interpersonal and verbal communication skills
  • Successful completion of Alyeska Resort Rock and Rappel Training
  • Prior Climbing instructing and guiding or other teaching experience preferred
  • Able to hike for extended periods of time, requiring lifting, bending and twisting
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions

  • Physical demands:  guides must be physically able to safely navigate all in-bounds areas in all weather and trail conditions.  You will be required to hike and talk for extended periods of time.  Lifting heavy objects (no more than 50 pounds), bending, twisting and shoveling may be required.  You will be required to stand, hike, and climb/rappel safely on uneven terrain.  Employee may be required to pass a functional capacity test developed for this job.
  • Work Environment:  the noise in this work environment is usually moderate.  Physical terrain in the work environment can be uneven with poor traction; there is mud, rock, and gravel outside and wet floors indoors.  Outside temperatures can be cold and wet.
